Perfume Concentration Levels Explained: Parfum vs Eau de Parfum vs 40% Extrait
When shopping for fragrance, you’ve probably seen terms like Parfum, Eau de Parfum (EDP), or even Extrait — but what do those actually mean?
More importantly… how do concentration levels affect how your fragrance smells and performs?
At Mistify Parfums, we take fragrance concentration further than almost anyone else. In fact, we are one of the only fragrance houses that lets you choose your concentration level.
Let’s break everything down clearly.
What Is Perfume Concentration?
Perfume concentration refers to the percentage of fragrance oil blended into alcohol.
The higher the oil percentage, the stronger and longer-lasting the fragrance typically becomes.
Here’s how the industry usually works:
-
Eau de Toilette (EDT): 5% – 15%
-
Eau de Parfum (EDP): 15% – 20%
-
Parfum / Extrait: 20% – 30%
Most major designer houses stay within the 15%–20% range for their Eau de Parfum releases.
Even when brands label something as “Extrait” or “Parfum,” it is often within the 20%–30% range.
Very few brands go above 30%.
Why Most Designer Fragrances Stay Under 20%
Luxury fragrance brands design their formulas to:
-
Open with strong top notes
-
Transition into heart notes
-
Dry down into base notes over time
At 15%–20%, you experience a clear progression:
Top → Middle → Base.
This is the traditional fragrance pyramid structure.
It’s elegant. It’s layered. It evolves.
But it also means performance is limited by design.
Mistify’s 20% Concentration (Closest to Original Performance)
When you choose 20% concentration at Mistify Parfums:
-
The scent performs closest to how the original designer fragrance was structured.
-
You will experience top notes first.
-
Then the heart notes develop.
-
Finally, the base notes settle in.
At this level, our fragrances perform very similarly to the originals in structure and evolution — because most originals are formulated around this range.
If you love how your favorite fragrance transitions over time, 20% is your best match.
What Happens at 40% Concentration?
This is where things change.
At 40% concentration, the fragrance oil percentage is significantly higher than traditional designer standards.
Instead of smelling:
Top → then Heart → then Base
You experience:
Top + Heart + Base almost immediately.
All three layers present themselves at the beginning in a more balanced, dense composition.
It may feel slightly stronger at first. That’s normal.
Give it around 20–30 minutes to settle on skin, and the scent will smooth out and resemble the original profile — just richer and longer-lasting.
At 40%:
-
Projection is stronger.
-
Longevity is extended.
-
The scent feels fuller.
-
The fragrance sits heavier on skin.
Very few fragrance houses go this high consistently.
We go beyond traditional extrait levels.
Why Freshly Made Fragrances Need Maceration
At Mistify Parfums, our fragrances are blended fresh to order.
Because of this, we recommend allowing your fragrance to macerate.
What does that mean?
Maceration is the process where fragrance oils and alcohol fully bind together over time.
For best results:
-
Let your bottle sit in a cool, dark place
-
Allow 2–4 weeks for full development
-
Spray occasionally to introduce oxygen
Over time, the fragrance becomes smoother, deeper, and more blended.
Many customers notice performance increases after proper maceration.
Which Concentration Should You Choose?
Choose 20% if:
-
You want the scent to evolve traditionally.
-
You prefer lighter projection.
-
You want closest structural similarity to the original formula.
Choose 40% if:
-
You want maximum longevity.
-
You prefer stronger projection.
-
You enjoy a denser, fuller scent experience.
-
You want extrait-level performance and beyond.
